September 2006 Monterey Events

Monterey Adventure Getaways

Need a nudge to get out of the house? Want to plan a trip around an event? As fall is getting into full swing, Monterey County has a number of fresh and fun activities that will make you want to pull out the day planner and put in for PTO (paid time off).

California Wine Month:
Governor Schwarzenegger recently honored the California wine industry with a proclamation designating September 2006 as California Wine Month. This proclamation acknowledges the contributions of the wine industry and the value of wine to the state.

Many wineries will be offering special events during the month to celebrate this propitious designation. Chateau Julien Wine Estate in Carmel Valley has established a four week specialty tasting and tour schedule (below) based upon themes presented by the Wine Institute's official campaign.

Week One: September 1st- 8th: The Wine Estate will offer a complimentary Chateau Julien glass to all tour guests. Only limited release Private Reserve wines will be poured on tour.
Week Two: September 9th – 15th: Select vintages from the Wine Estate’s library will be featured throughout the week, including vertical tastings of the winery’s flagship Private Reserve and Estate Vineyard Merlot.
Week Three: September 16th – 22nd: Various food and wine events and seminars held throughout the week.
Week Four: September 23rd – 30th: Tours of the Wine Estate will focus on the vineyard and educate tour guests on the sustainable practices of the industry.

Around the County:

Labor Day Weekend (September 2-4) is your last chance to see the Monterey Bay Aquarium's 'scariest' exhibit: Sharks: Myth and Mystery closes at 5pm on Monday September 4.

The Monterey Jazz Festival (September 15-17) will add another stellar year of performances to its schedule. This year – the 49th -- presents outstanding artists such as McCoy Tyner, Dave Brubeck, Roy Hargrove, Robben Ford, Keb Mo', and Bonnie Raitt.

Chowder, sushi, kebabs, and shellfish galore at the 13th Old Monterey Seafood & Music Fest (September 30-October 1) held in (where else) Old Monterey. Lots of great music to fill your ears, while you fill your belly.

Get your fill of flyboys when the California International Airshow takes to the skies, September 30-October 1. U.S. Marines Harrier “Jump Jet” demonstrations, aerial acrobats, planes on display, and lots of noise to get your engines revving.
